How to turn any space into a home office

When you think of home office, you might think of large rooms with bookshelves and big desks. Not a very realistic scenario for most at-home professionals.

Seeing as work from home is here to stay and many CEOs will encourage it in the future, it might be time to move away from working on that kitchen table and invest in proper setup for optimum productivity.

Whether you are in a small one bedroom or in a bungalow in the suburbs, we believe that all at-home professionals deserve to work in a space that promotes productivity at comfort. We prepared a guide to turn any space into the ideal home office.

Clearing a space

The biggest problem most people face when trying to create a home office is finding a large enough space to fit all your necessary equipment. However daunting this may seem, it can be easy and refreshing to free up a whole new area in your home.

Take stock of your rooms and furniture. Are there rooms that are just used for storage (i.e a spare room or basement)? Is there furniture that is taking up too much space of a current room (like a large couch or shelf)?

Answering these questions will naturally open space in an extra or existing room in your home.

This is a great opportunity to clean up any unused furniture and sell or give away. If you're having trouble saying goodbye, you can always relocate these items, or get a storage unit.

Ideally, you will need roughly 5 feet of width, and 4 feet of depth in order to comfortably fit a nice desk and chair. Anymore space is better, but any less might be uncomfortable as you will not have space to stretch and roll.

Begin setting up your office

Now it's time to ensure the space you created is ideal for working. This will include...

• Adequate wires and plugs

• Good internet connection

• Lighting

If your space is not near a plug, you can always get yourself an extension cable and power bar to ensure your electronics have power. To keep everything tidy, you can use nails to keep wires along the wall.

You will also need to ensure your space has enough internet to be able to perform your work. You can utilize some free internet speed testers to test your speed. If your new space is far from your router, you can also get some affordable internet extenders.

Find furniture to fit your space.

Now that you have the space and you have setup the necessary electronics, you will need to get some furniture.

You may need cabinets and shelves for additional storage, a smaller table to hold a printer or other larger tools, or a carpet or rug for comfort.

If your new space can't fit all your tools, consider modifying some existing spaces to hold your tools.
